Electrical Systems

Electrical accidents involving electrical equipment and systems such as motors and generators do happen. When electric motors or generators fail during use, it invariably means extensive equipment repair or replacement, the high cost of which is often minor compared to the impact of unscheduled system downtime. When they do, most attorneys and insurance companies do not have the forensic engineering expertise to provide adequate services to the injured party(ies) to ensure that they are compensated for the medical expenses, damages, loss of income and trauma incurred through no fault of their own.

Global Technology Experts (GTE) can provide the necessary expertise on a just-in-time basis.  The failure modes are often categorized as electrical (insulation breakdown), mechanical (rotor deflection, shaft deformation, bearing wear), structural (frame damage, mounting breakage), or lubrication failures.  Failures are related to site and application specific conditions such as:

· Winding attack by dust, moisture, and solid or chemical contaminants

· Overheating due to high ambient temperature or altitude, or a buildup of dust or debris on the motor surfaces resulting in blockage of the cooling air passages

· Electrical supply or distribution system irregularities including over- or under-voltage, voltage unbalance, or use of a motor with variable-frequency-drive-provided waveforms

· A buildup of difference in voltage between the bearing housing and the shaft, resulting in the pitting of bearing surfaces

· Improper matching of a motor to load (over- versus under-loaded motors)

· Miscellaneous causes such as voltage surges, vibrations, improper coupling specifications, grease compatibility/contamination/frequency of change, and alignment.

Based on numerous electrical systems failure analysis investigations, GTE has developed a systematic investigation approach that has proven effective in identifying the particular causes of any given failure and developing recommendations for corrective action as appropriate.

GTE to participate at the Atlanta Claims Association Convention April 17-19, 2013. Please stop by our booth and speak with us.
George Kremer will be attending the Southern Loss Association held at Ravina Club on September 13, 2012.
Dr. Ash Thakker attended the Southern Loss Association held at Ravina Club on March 8, 2012. Wind damage to structures was the topic of discussion.
